I recently had the chance to hold an illustrated manuscript from the fifteenth century and even to turn its delicate pages。 It was a beautiful book, and the amount of work that went into making it, including page after page of calligraphy and illumination, was obvious and staggering。 It was the single most beautiful object I've ever held in my hands。In Illuminated Manuscripts, Michael Kerrigan offers an introduction to these books that flourished through the medieval period and into the beginnin I recently had the chance to hold an illustrated manuscript from the fifteenth century and even to turn its delicate pages。 It was a beautiful book, and the amount of work that went into making it, including page after page of calligraphy and illumination, was obvious and staggering。 It was the single most beautiful object I've ever held in my hands。In Illuminated Manuscripts, Michael Kerrigan offers an introduction to these books that flourished through the medieval period and into the beginning of the Renaissance。 Back then, books were rare, and before the invention of the printing press, all of them had to be copied by hand。 Some of these books were incredibly beautiful and Kerrigan gives us glimpses of some of the best。 As with all art books, a decision had to be made between giving space to images and giving space to text。 Kerrigan chose images, which is always the right choice, but I would have liked having a bit more text。 The book includes an introduction of about 30 pages that is helpful in understanding the history and purpose of the books, and each image is given plenty of space (I hate tiny, cramped images in an art book), but I would have liked to know a bit more about each of these pages from old illuminated manuscripts。 Still, It's a beautiful book and I enjoyed it very much。 。。。more

A very simple, brief introduction by Michael Kerrigan to the world of illuminated manuscripts with a selection of color images。Not a fan of the unnamed typeface, thin and hard to read。
